Day 1: A Pigeon in the Airport

Arrived at GVA early on Continental. Almost 30% empty seats on the way over on a 757. Slept little. Delay between Chicago and Newark but other than that, no problems. Sentimental flying out of my homeland, seeing both the Principal Building and the the Statue of Liberty shrink away in one day

Made friends with a friendly baby and pigeon while waiting in Newark airport. The baby mostly delighted in chasing the pigeon around. He would then turn around to see if I was watching and would try to grab the pigeon, who was obviously frightened at being inside the Newark airport, even without being chased by a baby. Eavesdropped on several interesting conversations. One took place between four Swiss-French musicians who apparently had just played a gig in NYC. They bickered with each other before receding into headphones and the latest edition of The Rolling Stone Magazine. The other, between three boys, barely my age, working for tips, pushing wheelchairs, and retrieving luggage. Between odd jobs, they goofily texted and talked about how to catch a girl, each of them in distinct thick Spanish, Hindi, and Creole accents. After one run pushing a greying woman and her two bags to a nearby gate, the Creole sounding boy showed off a hefty tip. Then he asked, "How do I say that in Spanish?" They played this game "How do I say that in ___?" game until an older man, with an official looking ID came over and told them to get back to work. They did, for a bit and then returned, this time comparing nicknacks they had found abandoned on the airport chairs.
